Surface Warfare Officer
Job Summary:
The U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) is an active duty Officer that plays a critical
leadership role in managing and operating Navy surface ships. As a SWO, you will lead a team of sailors and officers while commanding the day-to-day operations of warships, supporting naval missions, ensuring the ship's readiness, and contributing to national defense. The role includes both operational and strategic responsibilities, requiring high-level decision-making and leadership under pressure. You will also be responsible for ship navigation, maintenance, weapons systems, and other surface warfare-related tasks. In addition, Surface Warfare Officers often deploy to international waters to engage in defense operations, humanitarian missions, and multinational exercises. Navy will provide paid training to prepare selectee for this job!
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.

Age: Must be between the ages of 19 to 29 at the time of commissioning, waiver
available for up to age 32. - Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
- Physical Fitness: Must meet the U.S. Navy's physical fitness standards, including
medical, physical, and psychological evaluations. - Officer Aptitude Rating: Candidates must score a minimum of a 42 on their most recent Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) exam
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear and effective interaction with crew members, superiors, and allied force.
Key Responsibilities:

Ship Operations and Command: Direct the operational readiness, navigation, and
overall mission of Navy surface ships, including destroyers, cruisers, amphibious assault ships, and aircraft carriers. -
Leadership and Team Management: Lead and mentor a diverse team of officers,
sailors, and enlisted personnel. Manage crew performance and development, ensuring a cohesive and disciplined team. -
Tactical and Strategic Planning: Oversee planning, coordination, and execution of
naval operations. This includes warfare planning, logistics, navigation, and coordination with other naval units and allied forces. - Weapons and Systems Management: Maintain and operate shipboard weapons
systems, sensors, and communication systems. Ensure readiness of shipboard equipment for combat and defense scenarios. - Operational Readiness: Manage regular drills, inspections, and certifications to ensure the ship and crew are prepared for deployment or combat situations. This includes training exercises, casualty control, and emergency response.
- Maintenance and Logistics: Oversee the upkeep and operational functionality of the ship’s machinery, power systems, and technical components. Work with engineering teams to maintain equipment readiness.
- Mission Execution: Participate in global deployments for national defense, strategic presence, disaster relief, or counter-piracy operations. Represent the Navy and the U.S. during interactions with international allies and partners.

Professional Development: Complete ongoing training and education programs,
including advanced warfare tactics, leadership training, and qualifications, to advance in the Navy officer ranks.
